Jodi Hollis

Biography:
The horrific scenes of the 2004 Asian Tsunami brought back memories of a time when family and friends lost their homes in Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Remembering how as a child the support of a nation went to those in need at that time, Jodi Hollis felt compelled to do something for the Tsunami victims and what better place to offer her services than the Australian Red Cross.

Jodi and her husband joined the Gold Coast Regional Office team of volunteers and was soon organising collection tins, answering phones and responding to inquiries, organising volunteers and assisting with rosters and going to public venues for collections.

Overwhelmed by the ongoing support from the general public, Jodi found that by giving her time, energy and skills she felt like she was able to contribute in just a small way.

After the Tsunami appeal, Jodi continued on with the Red Cross and, amongst other things, became a member of the Disaster Response Team.

It was a little surreal for Jodi that having completed her Disaster Training on the Monday, to be placed on ‘standby’ on the Thursday with flooding on the Gold Coast. The Miami Caravan Park and residents from Currumbin Hill were evacuated to Burleigh where the Disaster Response Team began to register the displaced residents and warm them up with a nice cuppa. Whilst it was a stressful time for the victims, the team came to know and respect them for their sense of community and support for each other in time of need.

Having assisted with the Tsunami Appeal, Red Cross Calling, and experienced, hands on, a disaster situation, Jodi is continuing her volunteer work with Red Cross assisting with administration work at the Gold Coast Regional Office and supporting a homeless youth project.

Jodi says she feels very lucky to be a part of a wonderful team and would encourage others to volunteer because by helping others, you reward yourself.

Who is Jodi Hollis? Well she is a 30 something woman who is keen to help others and is always interested in lending a hand.
